Ah yes, the apple computer is a lemon because Lyle accidentally found himself as tech support.

Johnny's first computer is a Dell laptop. I wonder though if in the 80's they had computer classes, because then he might've known a desktop, which is still a different set up then a clunky Dell laptop.

Johnny is at least moving at the right part of the computer that is the mouse. Even though the cursor isn't moving. He also manages to open up every single Microsoft program ever, which how does he have those? They're totally extra now right?

Where's the internet? Have you tried connecting to the wifi? Obviously....what's wifi?

Daniel, darling, dearest, my boy, you were pissed when Cole made a targeted ad, you're literally putting kicking Johnny in the face on the worst night of his life (one of) as your ad for your dojo. You even say "Don't be a snake in the grass. Be a champion."

And then Daniel's once again undercutting Johnny's finances by making sure all the sessions are free. Which I get is because his lessons with Mr. Miyagi were free but still.

Amanda is a CEO.

Daniel spent half the Q3 (third quarter) marketing budget for LaRusso Auto on his dojo advertisement. That seems...uh...financially very bad. I don't know legal laws for corporations but...bad.

Like he excuses it because the dealership will get publicity at the Valley fest, but still to take corporate funds to use for personal I feel like is an actual white collar crime.

Jessica Bluestein is I guess one of Amanda's friends or coworkers/staff whose husband started a ska band and then hooked up with a palates instructor half his age.

Amanda misses the simple days of dicks on billboards. Which fair, it's going to get a million times worse Amanda, so be prepared.

Anoush got transferred from Encino to North Hollywood. Which I guess is a downgrade

Sam's hair when it's braided or in these little three buns is very cute.

Robby's hot water was also turned off.

Jacuzzi confirmed at the LaRusso's. It must be that thing by the fire place. Also apparently a possum died in it.

There's also a cobra kai phone case. Seriously? Johnny did you have all this made or did the students have it all made?

Poor bonsai, also did you go out and buy these to hurt the bonsai? Also poor kid holding the bonsai that was dirt and ceramic and tree that hit him in the face.

What Johnny says is pretty much exactly how Tom Cole did his targeted ad against Johnny.

His students doing his whole internet marketing team is very sweet, but also he needs to compensate them for all that free tech labor.

I don't think I'd fully realized that he'd bought more space from Zarkarian. I guess he just had this room locked for Zarkarian to have storage previously?

I get why the kids automatically assumed that because of Robby being Johnny's son that's why Johnny got mad at them for the tournament. But in reality his rules he tried to instill after the tournament was don't cheat and don't be unsportsmanlike. And that should apply to everyone even Robby. And maybe he should've reminded them of that rather than just shutting down the conversation and telling them to clean mats because they got into his business and it's not their business.

Especially since Kreese is going to use that to drive a wedge between them all.

I get why Amanda is getting frustrated, Daniel said that he used part of the budget to get eyes on his dojo, and it's fine because they have valley fest for the dealership. But then he goes after the dealership spot too.

I don't think she has a name yet and I don't remember it, but I like that she gives Johnny the 411 on free food. He's got kind of a community in the area. Lyle his tech person, the Mini Mart guy (sorry I forgot his name) and the homeless lady.

Did Kreese not know previously that Robby was Johnny's? Or that Johnny had a kid? Because it feels like not only does he have his eyes on a way to drive a wedge but also a target.

Johnny says he'll never get a chance to train Robby.

Kreese dumping a lot of paranoia and random fears on Johnny, like Daniel stealing away Miguel too.

Ah the correction, Johnny's learning and paying attention.

They changed it, Miguel and the Diaz's are in apartment 1.

Johnny kidnapping Miguel: 2? 1? I feel like generally he has the kids meet him somewhere rather than driving them somewhere.

Sal and the delicious chopped onion burgers. So Johnny knows the name of the chef at this diner and it's not Smitty's.

Robby's birthday Monday February 4, 2002 after 17 hours of labor.

Johnny was coming off a 3 day bender.

He gets chocked up when he says he failed Robby on his first day in the world and every day since.

Mr. Miyagi never taught Daniel how to use a weapon during the first 3 films, so sometime later he must've taught him some, at least a bo staff.

Stingray is out here talking about the teenage mutant ninja turtles, Donatello is his favorite.

The initial shots make it look like they're up much higher then they actually are.

Look how proud he looks to have that thing and his ice blocks. It is really cool.

Okay so it always comes off as if Johnny like snuck in and struck, but the fact someone dropped the logo over valleyfest makes me think someone on the valley fest prep team knew about it.

Plus all the lighting people knew exactly where to direct the lighting and the music to play. So they knew that Daniel would get interrupted and didn't tell him.

The smoke, the lighting, the fireworks, Daniel someone did not give you an updated memo on this and the Valley Fest was more than happy to put this on without telling you. Also the amount of work these kids put in to perform on even less notice then Sam and Robby?!

Like sure Kreese is standing in the back talking to a tech person but still, they had to have gotten permission and people had to have agreed otherwise security would've taken them off the stage. Someone on the Valley Fest committee loved this idea.

This crowd craves violence.

Omg there's even custom logo lights being shown on the backwall.

I do love that Aisha got her own solo where she was blindfolded and kicked and broke a bunch of boards. She looks so happy and proud.

Like yes, them upsurping Daniel sucks, but also this is such a great celebration for his students. And also again Aisha! (add to it disproving one of Silvers goals of blinding your opponent and making them unable to do anything, here Aisha is proving you can still kick ass and not see, which you would think Daniel and Sam would be proud of her)

Hawk's jump kick is also really cool.

For a festival it also makes sense, they're throwing out merch and what not. It's fun for the crowd.

Daniel's thing would've been super cool, and two stages can go at the same time, the fact they completely stopped to watch Cobra Kai is a bit of a bummer, because they could've continued. Our local fest had a big main stage performance and then a small stage performance like super close but the noise pollution wasn't bad enough to disturb either. But because the crowd left and Daniel was so stunned they just seemed to have given up, when that didn't have to be the case, he could've show cased his own thing at the same time and gotten a different audience because Cobra Kai isn't going to be for everyone.

Kreese looks ecstatic in the back with the tech and sound people.

The melting ice makes me so sad every time.

So do you think Johnny and Daniel both had similar ideas of breaking bricks without Johnny knowing that Daniel had that planned? Because Daniel's plan was a secret, they just both thought it'd look cool? Daniel's of course is from TKK2 but did Kreese teach Johnny that? Johnny told Kreese that he had a few moves Kreese didn't teach him, and if that's the case where'd he pick those up?

Robby looks mad. That's probably one of the biggest one step forward another step back is that not only did Johnny upstage Daniel but he also upstaged his own son.

5 habits Sam picked up after Johnny got assimilated into the family

Now she knows a whole lot of new and exciting swear words, but it always sounds hilariously sweet in her voice because she doesn't have the angst or the rage that Johnny has. It usually takes people a solid minute to realize she just said something bad, even though it sounded like a Disney princess speaking.

She began saying: "move stupid arrow" "send it to the internet" "hashbrowns" As a meme, to mock Johnny, but now she cannot speak right and she sounds unhinged.

She answer's Johnny's "pussies" with "dickies" to provoke him and his masculinity. Always works.

Having to clean the cache and memory of Johnny's cellphone because he fills it with useless apps and videos. Very inappropriate videos.

Using 'badass' as the supreme compliment word for anything. Daniel is suffering.

Karate Kid/Cobra Kai survey

It's the year 2021 and you're obsessed with The Karate Kid. How are you feeling?:  tbh it’s gotten to the point that everything that I do is based on this franchise. I can’t do anything except quote it, talk about it and obsess over it. But to be fair, I’ve always loved this franchise and the fact that in 2021 I still obsess over it, doesn't surprise me much.

Did you grow up with TKK or are you new to the series?:  I kinda grew up with TKK even though its about 15 years my prior, but its one of my all time favourite movies so I rewatch it at least once or twice every month. In regard to the series, I’m just glad they made a comeback because I missed my boys.

We gotta do the basics. Favourite character:  At first it was Daniel because I felt for the little new kid who was getting bullied, but as I got older it went straight to Johnny. That cocky blonde boy with his ocean blue eyes made me crazy and especially now that I watch him in Cobra Kai, all he needs is some love and a hug...plus I would legitimately kill to have a drink with him because he knows where the party is at and I just love him with all my little heart.

Favourite ship: I don’t really have one, but the whole “Lawrusso” one is interesting from different perspectives.

Underrated character: the man, the myth, the silent legend - Jimmy..... but in all seriousness I love the dynamic that Johnny and Bobby have so in that case Bobby.

Underrated ship (don’t say therapy, lol): the friendship of Carmen and Amanda. I want their friendship to THRIVE!!! Those queens gotta deal with hormonal teenagers and unstable partners, so they might as well just become best friends and drink wine together. 

Wax On, Wax Off or Sweep the Leg?: .....Sweep the Leg (Get him a body bag Johnny!!)

Which of Daniel’s dumb little outfits is your favourite?:  It’s a tie between the black tank/burgundy shirt and jeans or the grey crewneck and red sweats because he looked hot in the first and comfy cozy in the other and I can’t pick between the two. 

Character from the films you most want to return, who’s not Terry Silver: Honestly it sounds bad but I'm so ready for Terry to come back....I want to see the chaos unfold especially considering the fact that Johnny has no idea who he is, so I’m ready to see how the two of them interact. I’m also ready for Mike because you know he and Johnny have similar personalities of the whole “I’m a macho man who's the hottest thing since sliced bread” and I kind of want to see them duke it out a little with Daniel in the back just being like “w-why must I attract these types of people...?” 

Scene that lives in your head rent-free: Got 4 of them that just run through my head like a hamster on a wheel....

1) the smirk. Johnny knew exactly what he was doing when he noticed Daniel and that little smirk just sent me

2) when Daniel is describing Ali to his mom (and to himself) and he goes on his little schpeal of “Her smile. She's got an excellent smile. She's really smart. I don’t know- I think she’s beaut- I’d say she's beautiful. I think she's beautiful. I think she’s something else.” straight to “She’s hot. Definitely hot.” like way to get all cute and sappy to “yeah she's a fox” and that little chuckle at the end

3) when Daniel goes up to the Cobras, post-Miyagi takedown and says “You guys be careful not to go stepping in front of any more busses now, alright?”

4) Johnny Lawrence’s most iconic part in all of Cobra Kai (so far) is “ and put one of those hashbrowns at the end like Hashbrown Team Cobra Kai or something and then SEND IT TO THE INTERNET”

Will Anthony LaRusso ever be relevant?:  will he....? honestly forget he was actually a character in the show, but I do hope he joins in the karate antics that go on, and if he doesn't I’ll happily take more Anthony/Johnny interacting scenes.

You live in The Valley and are forced into the karate gang war. Which dojo do you join?:  Cobra Kai 110%. The Way of the Fist. Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy.

What’s your training montage song?: I vibe with a lot of songs but probably Thnks Fr Th Mmrs by Fall Out Boy because it’s so hype.

It’s the crossover event of the century! Which TV show are you combining with Cobra Kai for an hour-long Saturday night special?: I don’t really have one but I could so see Johnny and Daniel as an unlikely pair of cops on Hawaii Five-O with Daniel being the brains (and the rational one of the two) while Johnny is the brawns (going in guns blazing - and by guns I mean both muscles and actual weapons) but yeah they'd be great as cops, especially in Hawaii...

I rarely post personal updates on this blog anymore, or bits of writing that aren’t officially published anywhere. I try to save that kind of stuff for my website, and my TinyLetter, and my Patreon... I’m still writing. I’ve been working on issue 25 of Reckless Chants (the release date has been pushed back, but it is still being worked on), and on poetry and a few other things. But these days, I don’t have energy for much more than that, and sometimes not even for that. I’m going to be giving birth sometime in the next week or so, and I’m trying to make last-minute preparations. Not to mention, being this pregnant is physically exhausting, in and of itself.

I was getting down on myself last week, because I haven’t done as much writing and art-wise this year as I’d initially planned on doing. I only completed one issue of Reckless Chants, I haven’t answered many calls for submissions or entered many contests, etc. But when I think about what I have done, I realize there’s quite a lot of it: I produced an issue of Reckless Chants, I self-published a split chapbook with Misha and a short chapbook of my own love poems and a comp zine of Racine and Kenosha poets, I published an e-chapbook with Hello America, I participated in quite a few poetry events, I had pieces in two art shows; the poems and essays I did place in various publications are ones I am very, very proud of, and I wrote a ton of other stuff--just because it hasn’t been published yet doesn’t mean the work isn’t valid. This pregnancy has forced me to slow down a little bit but that’s okay.

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: the capitalist mindset of productivity has been so engrained in me that even though I reject it in theory, rejecting it in practice is a lot harder. If I’m not constantly making (i.e., producing) something or sending what I’ve produced out into the world, I feel like a failure. If I don’t do all of the things, I feel useless. But all that happens when I overextend myself in any regard is that I burn out. And so being forced to slow down is maybe not just okay but actually good for me. I have started allowing myself to create (whether that be writing, art, or anything else) just for the sake of it, without needing to put it out into the world right away. And I have allowed myself to just...live. I haven’t written or published as much this year, but I have spent time in bookstores and cafes and museums, and outside, and with my kidlet, and I have read so many books, and maybe this year was more about filling myself up with inspiration again so that in the new year I will have more from which to draw and use in my own writing.

It has been, overall, a pretty good year, despite the world being on fire. Of course there have been stresses and sorrows, but when aren’t there stresses and sorrows? That’s life. (That’s what all the people say). I don’t want to go into detail about any of my troubles right now. I save that kind of talk for my semi-secret blog (I’m sure the people who follow it feel incredibly blessed, haha), and anyway, as I said--despite the hardships, it has been a pretty good year for me.

Another thing I’ve begun doing is making lists of things I’m grateful for/things that make me happy, no matter how small. Not because I think one has to be relentlessly posi all the time, just because--I don’t want to take anything for granted.

Some things I’ve been grateful for recently include:

Fresh blueberries on French toast

Creative time spent with Little D; he likes to sit in my office/studio and work on art and craft things while I write

Listening to jazz while clacking away on my typewriter

Treating myself to greasy hashbrowns from the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru

Snow (it has since all melted, but there’s a chance we’ll get more in the next few days)

The fact that the last three chapbooks I’ve read have been by poets from working-class, second-tier* towns: Milwaukee, Columbus, and Erie. (*I don’t think of these towns as second-tier, but in the arts & culture world, they’re often considered such.) It proves that great poetry comes from everywhere, not just NYC, California, and Chicago.

The mini-zine I made, the fact that it got me excited about zines again

Making gingerbread while listening to Booker T. & The MGs’ In the Christmas Spirit

Dying my hair while listening to the World/Inferno Friendship Society’s Addicted to Bad Ideas (also: the fact that I can listen to that album again without falling into a spiral of nostalgia followed by sadness)

Exfoliating lip scrub--I’m not kidding, I get the worst chapped, dry lips at this time of year and exfoliating lip scrub helps so much more than just chapstick alone

A few other things before I close out this post:

I’m no longer the Poet Laureate of Racine. That sounds dramatic, like I was fired, but no, it’s only that my term came to an end and I had to pass my laurel wreath on to another poet. I had a hard time with it for a couple weeks. I was feeling bad about some other stuff and feeling like, without the title and the role, I’m now a nobody again. But I got over it, realized a couple things: 1. Just because I no longer have the title doesn’t mean I lose any of the connections I’ve made or community I’ve been part of over the past two years. 2. Maybe I am a nobody but that’s okay. (I AM AN OLD NOBODY AND I LOVE WHAT I DO.) Also, the poet who is my successor is very, very worthy of the title, and I am excited to see what they will do over the next two years.

I’ve decided what my favorite Christmas movie is. Most people choose from the list of classics, and I’ve known a few people who are a bit more unorthodox and say Die Hard is their favorite Christmas movie, but I’ve decided mine is RENT.

You should read “Cat Person,” the short story that’s broken the internet, if you haven’t already. Whatever your feelings on the story itself, it’s amazing (and kind of heartening) that a short story has gone viral and caused so much uproar. Also, it has led to a lot of important discussions. One of the main discussions it has brought up is that of the ways in which we tend to view fiction that seems confessional as personal essay or thinly-veiled memoir, and devalue it--especially if it’s written by women. There have been many times in my life when people (mostly men) have read my fiction, or the stories I’ve written where I don’t state whether they’re fiction or memoir, and tried to parse which parts of the stories were ‘true’ (meaning: had happened to me, personally), and which parts were made up. Another “Cat Person”-related thing you might enjoy hate-reading is this random dude’s letter to the main character; which you should then promptly follow up by reading the response to his response. All I could think when reading that dude’s letter was that he’d likely feel the same way about a lot of the girl characters in my fiction, and he’d really not like my personal essays/memoirs about my actual real-life days of drinking too much and hooking up with questionable people.

The next time I make a big update like this will most likely be in the new year. Sometime in the next eight days or so I’ll be giving birth--I’m a little nervous, but mostly I’m just ready to get this baby out, and I’m hoping that it happens sometime in the next couple of days. And my birthday is New Year’s Eve. So, the next time you hear from me I’ll be 36 and have a newborn babe. And then I’ll tell you about my plans for 2018, of which there are many (as I quote every year around this time: got new dreams and I’m gonna make ‘em real).

I hope you’re all having lovely winter holidays, if you celebrate any of them. Tomorrow is the solstice, and then the days start getting longer again; the light begins its slow return.
